"Now we do everything together and we're comfortable." Do you 'let Fluffy off the chain' in front of your partner?

Bodily functions are something we ease into when it comes to new relationships. Most people won't sit down on a first date and fart in front of the other person, but once you've shared a small hotel room with a very nearby toilet, all bets are off. In essence, once you've crossed the barrier of eternal stench, a little puff of temporarily-stinky air is nothing to sniff at.

One woman has learnt not to hold her farts in the hard way... when it landed her in hospital.

A TikToker who goes by the name CazaKid shared a video to the platform showing her in hospital having her appendix removed because she held in her farts around her boyfriend.

"Me and my boyfriend doing everything together and comfortable," she wrote alongside a pic of them both smiling and looking happy together.

The next shot shows the woman lying in a hospital bed looking rather miserable with a mask on her face.

She wrote in the next caption: "Me having to get my appendix removed because I hold in my farts around him."

"NEW FEAR UNLOCKED," commented one person.

Another added, "I would never make that sacrifice for a man."

Plenty of people agreed they would take the appendix removal any day of the week while others declared they wouldn't hold in a fart for anyone and several questioned if this is even possible (us included).

The question on most of our minds now is "Can this really happen?" - so we took a deep dive into the stinky depths of this topic.

According to Healthline, "Farting is a healthy way of releasing gas from your body."

It is a completely natural bodily function, everyone does it, with most people averaging around five to 23 times a day.

While there's no direct link to holding in your farts leading to appendix removal, the habit can cause digestive issues. One such issue is diverticulitis which is the inflammation or swelling of pouches that form along the digestive tract. This can be severe and can develop into an infection if left untreated. More research is needed into the connection between holding in your farts and diverticulitis.

Similarly, Professor Clare Collins, a Nutrition and Dietetics expert from the University of Newcastle wrote about the consequences of holding in gas for The Conversation. Prof Collins says it is still unclear if the suppression of gas is linked to diverticulitis.

While Prof Collins pointed out that holding in your farts can lead to the reabsorption of these gases into your circulation which can then be exhaled out with your breath.

So yes, they will find a way to come out eventually, and you're probably better off letting them out quietly and blaming the dog than ending up with stinky fart breath.
