STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- When plans for the impressively spacious and state-of-the-art expansion of Richmond University Medical Center were announced in 2016, administrators at the West Brighton hospital and the elected officials who helped fund the project pledged to bring a more modern medical experience to the people of Staten Island. Following the lead of other health-care institutions throughout the country, many of which have pushed smaller, non-invasive procedures offsite and kept major treatments onsite, the RUMC redesign was billed as a futuristic transformation for the aging hospital. Trauma, surgery and advanced care would be the core focus and the entire layout would be patient/family-centric.

The plan -- both ambitious and expensive, a six-year $250 million overhaul to be exact -- was to completely revamp the old Emergency Department, adding several oversized surgical suites, dozens of private rooms and treatment bays and a specialized mother/baby maternity unit, leaving plenty of space for family accommodations. A self-sustaining on-site electricity plant was conceptualized to fuel the campus -- especially during storms and natural disasters. The renovation was arduous, as the hospital still had to maintain operations throughout the rebuild.
