The Aleda E. Veteran Affair's Medical Center in Saginaw has been working to combat veteran suicide for over the last decade.

SAGINAW, MI — Saginaw’s Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center is recruiting nurses to work at health care facilities throughout Michigan, including in Saginaw, Traverse City, Cadillac, Grayling and Oscoda.

VA Nurse Recruiter Kristine Rodgers said the health system, which employs more than 300 nurses across the state, is growing its workforce and hiring registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants.

Although staffing shortages and recruitment challenges continue to affect the health care industry as a whole, “the VA is doing very, very well at keeping and retaining nurses and recruiting them at this point,” Rodgers said. “We did really well this year. We had a job fair in May. All of our positions were full at that point.”

Now, the organization is hiring more nurses to provide health care to veterans in Michigan.

Aleda E. Lutz VAMC in Saginaw is recruiting registered nurses and licensed practical nurses for the Community Living Center and Specialty Clinics. And VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics in Traverse City, Cadillac, Oscoda and Grayling are recruiting licensed practical nurses for the Patient Aligned Care Teams for outpatient primary care, according to a news release.

The pay range is $68,066 to $125,306 for RNs, $44,541 to $68,971 for LPNs, and $33,933 to $55,402 for nursing assistants, Rodgers said. The VA also offers pension plans, an education debt reduction program for eligible employees, a scholarship program for continuing education, child care subsidies for those earning less than $149,000 per year, and up to 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave and 11 paid holidays, she said.

The organization is also recruiting for its Transition to Practice Program for newly-graduated RNs with less than one year of experience. The program is designed to help a recent graduate transition to full practice as a competent RN. The RN will be enrolled in a 12-month program, which includes hands-on clinical and classroom training and will be accompanied by an experienced RN. The RN is required to attend all trainings to successfully complete the program, the release states.

“We have some amazing people that work here. We also treat our veterans as our heroes,” Rodgers said. “That’s always been a benefit, always been a privilege to listen to their stories and hear how the vets appreciate the health care we provide for them.”

The Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center operates an 81-bed skilled nursing and rehabilitation Community Living Center and provides care to more than 38,263 veterans in a 35-county geographic area from mid-Michigan to the Mackinac Bridge. Veterans also receive care at its nine VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics throughout Michigan.
