Mon Health System’s merger with the Charleston Area Medical Center system should be viewed as a positive for those systems’ current patients, staff and providers, as well as the general health care delivery system in the Mountain State.

Mon Health’s footprint in North Central West Virginia in Morgantown, Kingwood, Fairmont and Weston is well-established.

Likewise, CAMC’s expansive system of eight facilities in the Kanawha Valley — CAMC General, CAMC Memorial, CAMC Women’s and Children, CAMC Teays Valley, CAMC Cancer Center, CAMC Outpatient Surgery, CAMC Heart and Vascular Center and CAMC Urge Care — has a strong tradition of excellence in care.

Joining these two strong systems together — forming the new Vandalia Health — makes good sense both in terms of economies of scale and delivery of quality care.

Together, the facilities will now have more than 1,100 hospital beds available, with more than 11,000 staff members.

We agree with both CAMC President and CEO David Ramsey and David Goldberg, Mon Health president and CEO, on the value of this merger.

“Combining the strengths and unique attributes of two established and well-regarded health systems advances the best interests of West Virginia patients and families whose lives and well-being depend upon our services,” Ramsey said.

Goldberg emphasized the two systems’ well-established successes in their local communities as a great legacy to grow.

“The history and tradition of our respective hospitals, and the renowned clinical providers in our communities, will help propel the success of this partnership,” Goldberg said. “We look forward to working together to expand access to highest quality, affordable care for West Virginians, close to home.”

We also applaud the decision to keep the local hospitals’ identities intact. And both Goldberg and Ramsey emphasized they will remain committed to being good corporate partners in the communities they serve.

“We know for sure we’re going to maintain the local identity of the hospitals and the local board to the hospital,” Ramsey told the Charleston Gazette-Mail. “So that local flavor, the involvement of the community — this is not changing.”

The move earned the praise of U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, who touted the systems’ past success and their vision for the future.

“CAMC and Mon Health have provided quality health care to countless West Virginians for decades. Today’s announcement is the beginning of a new era for health care in the Mountain State, and will further help to improve access to health care in our rural areas,” the Democratic senator said in a prepared statement.

We applaud this new health care system’s commitment to its patients and its vision for continued growth and success, providing not only quality care but also a major economic impact for the communities they serve.
