Middletown police charged a 22-year-old man with attempted rape after they say he was found with his pants down in front of a 5-year-old girl Wednesday.

Police also charged Aaron M. Cunagin with indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors and indecent exposure after the incident was reported about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in the area of the Pineford Apartments.

The girl’s grandpa stopped the sexual assault in an apartment after he got suspicious of activity in a bedroom, according to court records.

The records gave this account:

The grandpa said he walked by the bedroom, which functions as a play room with a bed, crib and toys, and saw his granddaughter sitting on Cunagin’s lap, which he thought was weird, but then moved on.

Minutes later, two other children in the home were playing in the living room and the grandfather thought it was too quiet in the bedroom so he went to check it out. That’s when he said he saw Cunagin in between the crib and bed in the far right corner of the bedroom with his pants down and his genitals exposed. The girl had her pants down as well with her genitals exposed.

The grandpa said he stepped in, yelled and punched Cunagin.

The commotion woke up another woman in the apartment who said Cunagin told her that he was sorry for what he did and he had “blacked out.”

Police arrested Cunagin inside the apartment and took him to the police station, where he told detectives initially that his shorts had accidentally been pulled down by his knee when he stood up.

Police said they pressed him to be honest, according to court records, and he eventually said the girl had pulled her pants down and he started to feel “numb” and that he pulled his pants down.

He told police “It just went through my head. I was back and forth with myself,” according to court records. “I just felt numb. I just sat there with it in my hand.”

When police asked him what “it” was, Cunagin reportedly said he was referring to his genitals.

“It was just going through my head if should really do it or not,” he said, according to court records.

The girl mentioned that this was not the first time, police said in the affidavit, and that this happened five times prior. Cunagin denied any prior incidents.

He was jailed with a cash bond of $150,000.
