Amid a slight surge in Covid-19 cases, all dedicated ICU beds in Bombay Hospital were occupied by Covid-19 patients as on August 16.

The south Mumbai hospital has 14 ICU beds dedicated for Covid patients. Coronavirus cases in the financial capital have been rising over the last couple of days and medical experts warn that the numbers could further rise in the days ahead. Talking to India Today, Dr Gautam Bhansali said that the recent rise was being seen largely in co-morbid and old age categories. Some of these patients require hospitalisation while some also need oxygen.

Dr Bhansali said, “The rate of hospitalisation compared to the rise is almost negligible. Because of vaccination the severity is less. Even in cancer patients and the ones on dialysis, the condition isn’t so severe.”

Dr Bhansali added that they were expecting the surge. “But this is just a surge and not a wave. The number of Covid-19 cases were on a rise in Delhi in the last couple of days and there is a lot of travel that happens between Delhi and Mumbai and that could be a reason for the case rise in Mumbai. The cases have been on rise in London and the US as well and this could also be the reason. The cases could rise in the next week or so and then again they will come down and then there is the likelihood that the cases will rise during the festive season as well since many people will come out and won’t be wearing masks.”

Covid-19 cases in Mumbai have been slowly rising since the beginning of August and on August 14, the cases reached 882.

In the last 24 hours, 584 fresh coronavirus cases and zero deaths were reported in Mumbai. The active case tally reached 5,218 on Monday.

The overall tally of cases stands at 11,33,172 as of Monday and the death toll at 19,664, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. Out of the new cases, only 62 patients were symptomatic while the rest 522 were asymptomatic. The recovery count reached 11,08,290 on Monday. The recovery rate was 97.8 per cent in Mumbai.
